of 68,879 Google searches in Pew's study produced an AI summary.

Sports influence is changing. The way we measure it should, too.
Bowstone is an independent sports brand intelligence publication producing original observations about how AI represents teams, athletes, leagues and brands.
AI-generated answers are becoming another way people discover and understand sports identities. Search, social media, performance, valuation and sports journalism remain valuable, but they do not measure which identities AI selects, where it places them or how it describes them. Bowstone measures that distinct layer.
Presence · position · context
A NEW DISCOVERY LAYER
Answers increasingly sit between a question and a click.
AI-generated summaries and conversational answers can name, rank and describe sports identities before a reader reaches a team site, social account or news story.
That does not make AI the whole discovery landscape. It makes AI-answer visibility a distinct signal worth observing alongside the channels sports already understands.
of visits clicked a traditional result when an AI summary appeared, compared with visits without one.

WHAT TRADITIONAL METRICS MISS
Every measure sees part of the picture.
Followers describe audience size. Engagement describes interaction. Performance statistics describe play. Media exposure describes coverage. Valuation estimates describe financial assessments.
Each matters. None directly shows which sports identities an AI system selects, where it places them, or how it describes them in a generated answer.
Who appears, where they appear and in what context.
FOUR DISTINCT PILLARS
Separate questions need separate instruments.
Bowstone does not collapse durable recognition, recent prominence, discovery and regional variation into one score. Each pillar has a different job and a clearly stated maturity.
Established AI Visibility
Weekly Core measures durable recognition through a frozen question set, four AI providers and published, comparable observations.
Recent AI Visibility
A private experimental measurement evaluates prominence within a fixed rolling 28-day window. It is not yet a publicly validated product and remains separate from established recognition.
Discovery
Current Relevance v1 uses open-ended prompts to identify teams and athletes surfacing in AI-generated answers. It is preparing for its first official observation, and findings require identity and editorial review.
Regional Intelligence
Planned research will examine the distance between national and local-market recognition, beginning with Pittsburgh as a research concept.
THE BOWSTONE DIFFERENCE
The story isn't always who everyone knows. It's who AI is starting to notice.
An established team can remain prominent while its recent visibility fades. An emerging athlete can appear across multiple AI models before becoming a familiar national name. And a player whose reputation is modest nationally may matter much more in a particular market.
Bowstone is developing the measurements to investigate those differences.
Established AI Visibility is operational. Recent, Discovery and Regional measurements retain the maturity labels shown above.OBSERVE. VERIFY. EXPLAIN.
The measurement is the source material. Journalism gives it meaning.
Bowstone collects structured, repeatable AI-answer observations, then examines patterns and disagreements across providers. Those measurements help identify original editorial questions that a conventional results table may never surface.
The October 24 Weekly Core, for example, placed the Dallas Cowboys first in Bowstone's measured NFL team cohort at 95.1 AI Visibility points. It also recorded Jalen Hurts moving from 5.6 to 9.1 points across the October 17 and October 24 observations.
Bowstone separates model-generated perceptions from independently established real-world facts. Reporting and fact-checking still provide the context, causes and limits that measurement alone cannot establish.
The result is an independent sports intelligence publication built from proprietary observations and expressed through research, articles, newsletters and infographics, rather than simply an analytics dashboard.
Useful evidence starts with the right question.
Fans
A different way to follow which sports identities occupy attention and how that picture changes.
Athletes and representatives
Independent context for understanding recognition, positioning and peer standing.
Teams and leagues
A comparable view of how sports identities appear across leading AI systems.
Sponsors and marketers
An additional evidence layer for research, alongside audience, media and commercial measures.
Sports-business researchers
Published observations, methods and limits that can be examined rather than taken on faith.
