Sources: Rams star Garrett to have knee surgery, headed to IR

By Bowstone Staff

Myles Garrett will undergo knee surgery and go on injured reserve, ending his debut season with the Los Angeles Rams before it begins, per reporting from ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Bowstone measured the Rams the day before the news broke, and the franchise's BX Overall had already dropped 7.29 points from the prior week.

The score landed at 34.85, ranking the Rams 5th of 32 NFL franchises by BX Overall and 33rd of 239 franchises by BX Overall. That top-five NFL position sits in context: the pool median is 17.65 BX Overall, so the Rams are well clear of a typical franchise in model descriptions, but they trail the New England Patriots (38.85) by four points and sit 30.81 points behind pool leader Dallas Cowboys (65.66). The gap at the top is wide.

The more instructive finding is what the eight-week trend says. Over that span the Rams' BX Overall moved from 35.1 to 34.9, a direction Bowstone classifies as flat. Among the 165-team cohort tracked across those weeks, the pool median moved up 1.6 points. The Rams' excess against that movement was minus 1.9, ranking 118th of 165 by cohort excess. The franchise didn't fall against its own prior score in any dramatic sense. It lost ground relative to the teams rising around it.

The divergence between the Rams' two component scores is a separate, sharper signal. AI Visibility sits at 45.68 while Social Presence is 14.74, a gap of 30.94 points. Bowstone classifies that split as wide. The models name the Rams at a rate that reflects a franchise near the top of its league. The following isn't growing at anything close to the same pace. Those two figures describe different audiences moving at very different speeds.

The model-by-model breakdown on September 12 showed 19 total mentions: GPT-4o and Perplexity each returned 6, Claude returned 4, and Gemini returned 3. The spread is uneven but not lopsided enough to say visibility is concentrated in one place.

A Garrett absence strips the Rams of their marquee acquisition before a regular-season snap is played. That's the news. Bowstone's pre-injury read shows a franchise whose AI profile was already softening against a rising pool, with a social following that wasn't keeping pace with how often the models described them. The injury lands on a measurement that was already moving in the wrong direction.

Per ESPN's reporting.
