The Texas Longhorns decline to sell jersey patch inventory

Texas declined to sell jersey patch inventory after the NCAA opened the category on Aug. 1, choosing scarcity over immediate sponsorship revenue.

The Longhorns carry a BX Overall of 26.02, ranking 5th of 15 CFB franchises by BX Overall and 30th of 169 franchises by BX Overall. Their AI Visibility score sits at a perfect 100.

That number matters here. A program with maximum AI Visibility doesn't need a sponsor's logo to stay prominent in the conversations that shape brand perception. Texas's position in AI-generated discourse is already as strong as it gets, which gives the athletic department real leverage to treat jersey real estate as something to withhold rather than sell. Scarcity only works as a strategy when the underlying asset is already valued. For programs lower in the AI visibility stack, the calculus would likely run the other way.

Ohio State reportedly moved quickly to capitalize on the new inventory. Texas's decision to sit out, at least for now, signals a different theory of brand management. Whether that patience translates into a premium deal later, or simply becomes a missed revenue window, depends on how durable the demand turns out to be.

Per Sportico's reporting, the column is co-authored by professors John Cairney and Rick Burton, who frame the Longhorns' approach as a deliberate strategic position rather than an oversight.

Legend

  • BX Overall — Bowstone Index normalized against this entity's type peers (players vs. players, teams vs. teams) across every league — comparable across leagues.
  • League BX — Bowstone Index normalized within this entity's own league or conference, for within-league peer comparison.
  • AI Visibility — how often and how prominently AI models name an entity when asked about its sport, measured across Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini, and Perplexity. It combines how frequently the entity comes up, how high it places when models list names, and how consistently it appears across all four. One of the two signals behind BX.
  • Social Presence — week-over-week follower growth across Instagram, X/Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok. It measures momentum rather than size: a smaller account growing quickly scores higher than a large one sitting flat. The other signal behind BX.
  • Followers — combined Instagram + X/Twitter follower count across tracked platforms.
