This Week's Signal

Patrick Mahomes is the week's most mentioned athlete in AI, and the model split around him is the sharpest divergence in this run.

The NFL is back and so is one of its biggest stars, Kansas City Chiefs quarter back, Patrick Mahomes. From an AI perspective, Mahomes (-9.7 BX) → (BX Overall 67.3, NFL BX 78.1) reached 51 total mentions this week, the largest raw count of any player in the data. Gemini named him 24 times; Perplexity named him 3. That 21-mention gap sits alongside a share trend that reads flat over eight weeks: his raw count grew from 31 to 51 while his mention share slipped from 1.508% to 1.302%, meaning the battery expanded around him faster than his count climbed. His BX dropped 9.7 points this week despite a growing mention count, a reminder that one model's enthusiasm does not move the composite when the others are quiet.

In index movement, Coco Gauff saw a big boost to her BX score this week and Instagram following this week (up 2.1%); fresh off of her quarterfinals run in the US Open. Sophie Cunningham, on the other hand saw her own BX score fall, in part due to a slowing of her Instagram followers (up 20,000 this past week compared to 80,000 the week before). The Virginia Tech Hokies, with new coach, James Franklin and the Messi-led Inter Miami CF round out the top and bottom movement of the index this week.

In AI visibility, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark. Arguably the most recognizable star in the WNBA, Clark failed to garner any mentions with GPT-4o, but her team was mentioned twice by the AI model. Both Clark and the Fever drew significant interest from Gemini, as they were referenced a combined 32 times this week.

Why this one

Texas Longhorns +14.0 BX → (BX Overall 71.7, CFB BX 85.1) hold the top overall BX score in this week's data, and their eight-week trend is the strongest in the team cohort: a 45.2-point rise against a pool median of 1.6, ranking first among 165 tracked teams by cohort excess, with the next closest at 40.5. Their mention share has grown from 0.681% to 1.123% over that same window. Watch whether the share line keeps climbing as college football's opening weeks layer more teams into the battery, or whether a widening field dilutes what has been a clear rise so far.
